On Sleep
Sleep is like the elusive carrot on a stick, we're constantly chasing it but never fully catching enough. For some the issue may be not being able to fall asleep, for others it's not being able to stay asleep. It can also be that we're not getting quality sleep, whether it's because of congestion, teeth grinding, disturbing dreams, outside noises, new babies, night sweats, stress, and/or grief. Whatever the reason it remains one of the most challenging things for people to heal. Sometimes the answers are obvious, such as drinking less caffeine (or just less beverages before bed in general), exercising or moving your body more during the day, mouth guards, and less stimulating activities (such as movies and TV shows that may rile you up) before bed. Sometimes you just have to wait it out and get rest when you can, such as when you're sick or have a sick child, or newborn. However, if you feel you don't fall into these categories or like you've tried everything, maybe try pairing some new healthy sleep habits with some herbs. Making sure you get out enough energy during the day, waking and going to bed at the same time every day, not eating too late at night, meditating or journaling before bed, and turning off screens up to an hour before bed may all be helpful. If your nerves are frazzled or you feel stuck in fight or flight mode, try sipping on a tea made with any of the following: Chamomile, Lemon Balm, Tulsi, or Milky Oat Tops (drink well before bedtime though so you're not up peeing all night). If you feel overstimulated, overstressed, or can't turn your brain off try a tincture of Passionflower, Skullcap, Blue vervain, or Wild Lettuce. Have you already tried all these suggestions?
