3 Herbs for Better Sleep

3 Herbs for Better Sleep

There are many herbs that can help with sleep issues, depending on what the issue is that you're having, what's available to you and what form you'd prefer to take the herb by (tea, tincture, bath etc.). These are just my favorite herbs to reach for when I'm having a hard time sleeping.

*Always use caution when pregnant or when taking medications, especially other sedatives or pain medications.

1. Passionflower, Passiflora incarnata. Passionflower is my favorite herb for when I can't turn my brain off and my thoughts are running in circles. Safe for all ages, I like this herb in a formula or in a low dose if taken by itself (in higher doses it can make some feel groggy).

2. Skullcap, Scutellaria lateriflora. When I've had a really overwhelming day, my nerves are frazzled, or I'm having a hard time calming down and letting go, Skullcap is my go-to. It is a little bit bitter (but also kinda minty) so I like to combine it with other herbs in a tea a few hours before bed to help me wind down.

3. Lemon Balm, Melissa officinalis, doesn't actually make me feel sleepy, but it calms me. I love it blended with the above herbs or even on its own. When I feel frustrated, anxious, or overwhelmed, I reach for Lemon Balm in either a tea or tincture form, usually the tea as it tastes delicious. It's also safe for kids and has helped flavor many teas for my kids.
