For when you're holding onto tension, carrying emotional heaviness, feeling physically guarded, or having trouble letting go

The Corporeal Soul• Instinct• Embodiment

"I'm carrying too much, and I need to come back into my body."

In Chinese medicine, Po is the corporeal soul, the aspect of consciousness rooted most closely in the physical body.

While Shen is the luminous spirit of the Heart, Po is much more immediate.

It's the part of us that breathes, senses, reacts, protects, and knows through the body.

Po is associated with the Lung* and with our capacity to experience the physical world, instinctively respond to what is happening around us and ultimately let go.

This makes Po particularly interesting when we feel that something physically or emotionally held inside us.

Sometimes the body knows before the mind has words.

*A Note on Traditional Chinese Medicine

The terms used here (including Kidney, Liver, Spleen, Qi, Blood, and other Chinese medicine concepts) refer to Traditional Chinese Medicine theory and do not correspond directly to anatomical organs or biomedical diagnoses.

Why Nourish Po?

Po is the part of us that experiences life through the body. You might feel drawn towards Po when you notice:

  • A sense of being physically or emotionally tense
  • Difficulty letting go of something
  • Feeling overwhelmed by your surroundings
  • Strong emotions that seem to live in the body
  • Feeling disconnected from your physical self
  • Difficulty establishing healthy boundaries
  • A sense of carrying something you no longer need

Po isn't about suppressing difficult emotions.

It's about creating enough ground and safety to experience them, understand them, and eventually let them move.

When You Need More Support

Sometimes what you're experiencing in the Soul has a physical or elemental layer underneath it.

"I feel like I'm carrying everything in my body and can't let go."

Po + Metal Element tea

"I'm tense, overwhelmed, and feel like I've lost my grounding."

Po + Earth Element tea

"I'm holding so much tension and feel stuck."

Po + Flowing Qi

"I feel disconnected from my body and from myself."

Po + Shen

Tend both the embodied and the spirit.

The Herbs

Cleavers

Cleavers is the herb that gives this formula its strongest release quality.

Valued for its lymphatic and fluid moving actions, its energetic personality is beautifully aligned with Po: helping us imagine what it means to loosen our grip and let something move through.

Po quality: release• flow• unclench

Skullcap

Skullcap brings a deeply grounding quality to Po.

Used as a relaxing nervine, skullcap helps shift the body away from a state of tension and toward a quieter more settled awareness.

Rather than leaving the body, we learn to come back into it.

Po quality: settle• soften• inhabit

Motherwort

Motherwort brings the physical experience of emotion into the formula.

Associated with the Heart and nervous system, it has a particular affinity for moments when emotional experiences are felt strongly in the body.

It reminds us that emotional processing isn't purely intellectual, we often feel our way through it

Po quality: feel • hold • release

Wood Betony

Wood Betony has a long history in Western herbalism as an herb for the head, nervous system, and states of tension.

For Po, it represents the movement from being caught in our experience to becoming grounded within it.

It adds an earthy, old-world quality to the formula.

Po quality: ground• clear• return

Yarrow

Yarrow is the boundary herb.

Associated with circulation, digestion, and the body's protective responses, its energetic reputation has long been connected with protection and discernment.

For Po, yarrow asks: "What belongs to me, and what can I let go of?"

Po quality: protect• discern• release

A Po Ritual

Po is a beautiful Soul to work with through the breath.

Take your tincture in a little water or tea. Sit somewhere quiet and place both feet firmly on the ground.

Take a slow breath in.

Then make the exhale just a little longer.

As you breathe out, imagine releasing something you don't need to carry today. You don't need to identify what it is. Simply notice: What can I soften?

Let the body answer before the mind does.

FAQ

Is Po a calming tincture? Not exactly. Po is about embodiment and release rather than simply calming the mind. The formula is designed around the relationship between the body, instinct, boundaries, and letting go.

Why is Po associated with the Lungs? In Chinese medicine, the Po is housed in the Lung and is associated with the physical, instinctive aspects of consciousness. The Lung's relationship with receiving and releasing breath also gives Po a natural connection with the concept of letting go.

Can I take Po with the Metal Element tea? Yes. They complement one another beautifully, but they approach the Metal/Po territory differently:

Metal tea: What am I ready to release?

Po: What am I holding in my body?

Can Po be used with Foundations? Absolutely. This is where the broader Root to Bone system becomes useful.
