The Wood Element

"I need movement and a little room to grow."

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Wood is associated with growth, movement, flexibility, vision, and renewal.

Think of a tree.

Its roots anchor it, while its branches continually reach outward and upward. It bends with the wind rather than breaking against it.

Wood represents that same quality within us: the ability to grow, adapt, make plans, move forward, and respond to change.

Wood is traditionally associated with the Liver and Gallbladder* systems, which in TCM are connected with the smooth movement of Qi, decision making, direction, and the body's ability to move and regulate.

*A Note on Traditional Chinese Medicine

The five elements- Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water- are part of Traditional Chinese Medicine theory. They describe relationships and patterns within the body, mind, emotions, seasons, and natural world.

They do not correspond directly to the physical organs or biomedical diagnoses used in Western medicine.

"I feel stuck. I need movement." Wood
"I want warmth, joy, connection." Fire
"I need comfort and grounding." Earth
"I need to breathe, clear, and let go." Metal
"I need rest and replenishment." Water

Why Nourish Wood?

Growth requires movement.

But movement without roots can become scattered, while roots without growth can become stagnant.

Nourishing Wood is about supporting the balance between the two: grounded enough to feel rooted, flexible enough to keep growing.

The Wood tea brings together earthy roots, nourishing berries, bright citrus, and rich cacao to create a daily ritual around renewal and forward movement.

It's a tea for seasons of beginning again, making changes, clearing space, and remembering where you're going.

The Herbal Formula

Roasted Dandelion Root

Roasted dandelion root provides the deep, earthy foundation of the blend. Its bitter qualities have been valued for digestive and liver support, while roasting gives it a rich, coffee like character.

Why it's here: Grounds the blend and represents the deep roots from which Wood grows.

Goji Berry

Goji berries are traditionally used in Chinese herbalism to nourish Blood and Yin and support the Liver and Kidney systems. Their natural sweetness softens the deeper flavors of the blend.

Why it's here: Adds nourishment and natural sweetness to support healthy growth.

Orange Peel

Bright, aromatic orange peel brings a lively citrus character to the tea. Traditionally, citrus peels are valued for supporting digestion and the smooth movement of Qi.

Why it's here: Brings brightness, movement, and lift to the earthy foundation.

Hawthorn Berry

Hawthorn berries bring a naturally tart, fruity quality while supporting digestion and healthy circulation.

Why it's here: Adds movement, tartness, and beautiful red color to the blend.

Cacao Nibs

Roasted cacao nibs contribute a rich chocolate aroma and gently bitter flavor, transforming the blend from a purely medicinal tea into something genuinely pleasurable to drink.

Why it's here: Adds richness, warmth, and sensory pleasure while balancing the bitter and tart botanicals.

The Wood Ritual

Make your tea when you feel ready to begin again.

As it steeps, think about what you're growing.

What are you ready to move toward? What has become stagnant? What needs pruning? And perhaps most importantly:

Where do you need deeper roots before you reach for the sky?

Take your first sip slowly. Let the ritual be less about accomplishing something and more about creating space for your next season of growth.

Root down. Reach outward. Begin again.

A Note From the Apothecary

The Five Elements aren't something we have to "balance" perfectly every day.

They offer another way of noticing.

Sometimes we need the growth of Wood.

Sometimes the warmth of Fire.

Sometimes the nourishment of Earth.

Sometimes the release of Metal.

Sometimes the stillness and depth of water.

The ritual is simply an invitation to listen.

Wood reminds us that growth doesn't have to be rushed. It just need room to move.
